The Ferrari 488 Pista is one of the quickest cars ever to come out of Maranello. Thanks to a 710-hp twin-turbo V-8, a fast-shifting dual-clutch transmission, and a trick launch control system, it can out drag almost anything else on four wheels. But how does it stack up against a shifter kart with 85 horsepower that weighs almost nothing? It's way closer than you think in a drag race.
The Driven Media YouTube channel brought together a 488 Pista and a Division 1 Superkart to find out just how closely matched the two vehicles are in a straight line. Even with its advanced traction systems, the Ferrari struggles to walk away from the kart in a straight-up drag, beating it by only half a second in the quarter-mile.
Things are even closer in a roll race between the two cars. Because the kart doesn't have to worry too much about spinning its tires at the start or losing grip to the uneven surface, it can put more power from its 250-cc two-stroke engine to the ground. The result is a near-photo finish, with the Ferrari taking the edge. Things are equally close in the braking test, where the 450-pound kart can come to a halt just as quickly as the Ferrari, which has things like ABS helping out.
Of course, this isn't your run-of-the-mill arrive-and-drive go-kart. Division 1 karts like this can go for up to $11,000 fully prepped. Still, that's many, many times cheaper than any 488.
